Çorlu Airport

The Çorlu Airport proposal begins with a rigorous site analysis—topography, prevailing winds, airside safety envelopes, landside access hierarchies, and regional mobility links—synthesised into an architectural concept that balances operational efficiency with a sense of hospitality. The landside is organised around a clear forecourt that prioritises pedestrian safety and intuitive movement, with layered drop-off and pick-up areas separating public transport, taxis, and private vehicles, while parking is set at the perimeter and linked to the terminal by landscaped promenades. The terminal itself follows a simple “arrivals below, departures above” section: a generous check-in hall with modular islands accommodates both traditional counters and self-service kiosks, security leads to a retail and amenity zone with direct views to the gates, and arrivals benefit from short baggage transfer distances and daylight-led exits. The airside apron is planned for code C narrow-body aircraft, with stands adaptable to MARS operations for future flexibility. Baggage systems, catering, deliveries, and back-of-house functions are consolidated with clean/dirty separation and efficient service access. Structurally, a long-span grid provides column-free halls and modular expansion potential, using steel or hybrid systems calibrated for the seismic context. The envelope combines high-performance glazing, shading devices, and perforated screens inspired by Thracian textile patterns, ensuring both environmental control and cultural identity. Passive design strategies—orientation, roof overhangs, skylights, and PV-ready roofing—support daylighting and energy efficiency, with rainwater harvesting and low-carbon materials reinforcing sustainability. Accessibility is integral, with barrier-free circulation, tactile guidance, induction loops, and bilingual signage, while acoustics and natural finishes enhance comfort. Cultural integration is expressed through local materials, timber soffits referencing agricultural heritage, and curated art celebrating Çorlu’s history. Safety and compliance are embedded in the planning, aligning with ICAO, EASA, and national standards through standoff distances, scalable security, and life-safety systems. Finally, the entire design is modular and phased, enabling growth in gates, parking, and retail without compromising current operations, thus delivering a framework that is both functional and adaptable while creating a welcoming, efficient gateway to the region.
